Shreveport
Shreveport, also known as “Port City”, “Ratchet City” or “River City”, is the third largest city in Louisiana. It is located opposite Bossier City on the Red River and is the cultural and economic center of the “Ark-La-Tex” region. The “Ark-La-Tex” region is the area where the borders of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas meet. Because of this, Shreveport is also known as the “Gateway to East Texas”. Shreveport was founded in 1836. The name of the city can be traced back to the captain Henry Miller Shreve, who first made the Red River navigable. But Shreveport is not only about history, but also numerous attractions.
Central Louisiana
The Central Louisiana region is also known as the Crossroads. This region is characterized by scenic and cultural contrasts. Extensive prairies, smaller swamps, wooded hills and numerous deciduous forests are the main geographical features. Louisiana’s oldest settlements are also located in this region. The meeting of the Spanish-French heritage from southern Louisiana with the culture of the English-speaking pioneers from northern Louisiana is unmistakable here. The musical diversity, the rich history and a beautiful landscape with countless activities provide variety in the region.
Alexandria
The city of Alexandria lies on the south bank of the Red River and is the administrative seat of the Rapides Parish. It was founded in 1818, but it has only been functioning as a city since 1882. Alexandria is an economic and transport hub in central Louisiana and was an important trading post even during the Spanish occupation. Today you can explore and visit numerous attractions and sights in addition to the history, such as the “Kent Plantation House”, the “Alexandria Museum of Art”, the “Louisiana History Museum”, “River Oaks Square Arts Center” or the “Zoological Park” “. Alexandria also has 34 unique parks and recreation areas, including the Kisatchie National Forest and Indian Creek Lake and Recreation Area.
Natchitoches
The city of Natchitoches is located in Natchitoches County of the same name and is its administrative seat. It was founded in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis and named after the Natchitoches Indian tribe. Natchitoches is particularly known for its “Meat Pie”, which is a regional delicacy in northern Louisiana. The cityscape is characterized by historical architecture in European style with lots of stucco and red brick. Fortunately, the city was able to preserve many of the historic buildings. Examples of this architecture are the “First Baptist Church” in the city center and the “Basilica of the Immaculate Conception”, which is opposite the “Old Courthouse Museum”. Further sights are the “Oakland Plantation”, the “Kate Chopin House”.
