Geography

Illinois stretches from Lake Michigan to the southwest and south, and the state’s western border is the Mississippi. The main part of Illinois lies in the flat central lowlands, only the south and northwest are occupied by hill country (up to 378 m above sea level). There is a continental climate with extreme temperatures in summer and winter (occasional severe cold spells); Summer cyclones moving north from the Gulf of Mexico can cause heavy precipitation and great destruction in a short time.

Economy

Illinois has fertile humus soils and is one of the main growing areas for soybeans and corn, as well as growing wheat and sorghum. About 80% of the state’s area is used for agriculture. The livestock industry (cattle, pigs) is well developed; cheese production is well known. Natural resources are coal, oil, lead and zinc ores. Due to its central location in the USA and good transport connections, Illinois rose to the center of industry at an early stage, which is mainly concentrated in the Chicago area and includes iron and steel production, machine and device construction, the electrical engineering, chemical and food industries. Other important industrial locations are Springfield and Decatur. In recent times there has been a decline in the importance of industry and the expansion of the service and financial sector, especially in the Chicago area.
