Saint Paul

Saint Paul [snt p ɔ ː l], capital of the state Minnesota, USA, on the Mississippi (end point of major waterways) 285 100 residents (1950: 359 000 residents), of which (2010) 60.1% white and 15.7 % Blacks; the metropolitan area Minneapolis-Saint Paul-Bloomington has 3.8 million residents; catholic archbishop’s seat; Methodist Hamline University (founded 1854), University of Minnesota Institutes; Museums (Minnesota History Center, Science Museum of Minnesota, Minnesota Air Guard Museum, Minnesota Children’s Museum, and others); electronic, medical technology, chemical, etc. Industry; large cattle markets in the neighboring town of South Saint Paul; Inland port.

The Capitol was built from 1895-1903 according to plans by C. Gilbert; in the “City Hall and County Court House” (1932) the onyx statue “Indian God of Peace” (13 m high) created according to a design by C. Milles. The cathedral was built on the model of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and consecrated in 1915; the neo-Romanesque Ascension Church was built in 1869–73. The Landmark Center (1906), formerly the Federal Court House, now houses, among other things. the Minnesota Museum of American Art.
