Phenomenological Psychology
Phenomenological psychology is a direction within
psychology that emphasizes the patient's description of
himself and his environment, without the application of
theory as a basis for interpreting thoughts, feelings and
behaviors.
This psychological direction has its origins in
philosophical phenomenology, in which Martin
Heidegger (1889–1976) and Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908–1961)
have been central sources of inspiration. Heidegger rejected
concepts such as consciousness, subjectivity, ego and mind (mind)
because he believed these were not measurable and too
sensitive to different interpretations. He also rejected
modern empirical science and the importance
of technology for a better understanding of psychic
processes, which is today found among advocates of purely
phenomenological psychology.
Merlau-Ponty emphasized the importance of the body for
man's ability to understand himself and the world (the
cognitive body): it is through a bodily being-in-the-world
that man develops self-awareness and recognition. This view
has had an impact on more body-oriented therapies
in clinical psychology and psychiatry. |
