Southern Alabama

The history and beauty of this area make southern Alabama an absolute must-see for every tourist. Highlights include the Gaineswood Plantation in Demopolis, sights of the civil rights movement in Selma, the State Capitol in Montgomery and Auburn University in the Auburn-Opelika region.

Montgomery

Montgomery is the capital of the state of Alabama and the administrative seat of Montgomery County. It is the second largest city in the state and was founded in 1819. No other city has played a greater role in the history of the state than Montgomery. Particularly worth seeing in Montgomery are the “Jasmine Hill Gardens and Outdoor Museum”, the “Montgomery Zoo”, the first White House of the Confederate States, the “Dexter Avenue Baptist Church”, the “Flea Market” and the “First Baptist Church”. A special annual event is the “Alabama Shakespeare Festival”, where classic plays by the world-famous poet are performed. Culturally as well as historically, Montgomery has many places and buildings worth seeing. Art lovers should definitely visit the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. For those interested in history, “Old Alabama Town” is particularly recommended. Many buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries were extensively restored and now serve as an open-air museum, where those interested can learn everything about the lives of the people who lived here at the time.

Selma

Selma is a small town on the banks of the Alabama River and the administrative seat of Dallas County. The city was founded in 1820 by French explorers and colonists. Selma is also nicknamed “Queen City of the Black Belt” and “Butterfly Capital of Alabama”. The city became famous in 1965 for the marches from Selma to Montgomery under the leadership of Martin Luther King, which marked the height of the civil rights movement. The starting point of the marches as well as the headquarters of the civil rights movement was the “Brown Chapel AME Church”, which was declared a National Historic Landmark and is an important attraction for tourists. But Selma has many other interesting buildings and places, such as the mansion “Grace Hall”, the “Smitherman Historic Building” built by the Freemasons, the shopping street “Historic Water Avenue” or the “Old Town Historic District”, the largest historical district in Alabama. If you like things a little mystical, you should pay a visit to the ghost town of “Cahawba”, the first capital of Alabama, on the area of the “Old Cahawba Archaeological Park”.
