Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands National Park is the largest and most breathtaking of all the parks located in the state of Utah. It is located about 30 miles southwest of Arches National Park. The park is so gigantic that compared to it, the much more famous Grand Canyon is just a lonely crack in the ground. Looking from some plateau, one realizes one’s pettiness and the enormous power of nature. The mass of rolling water from the local rivers has eroded a network of gorges and valleys in the desert landscape.

The territory has been known since the middle of the 19th century, when it was carefully studied by various researchers and geologists. Much earlier, however, numerous Indian tribes roamed the local valleys. Originally, the area was considered an abandoned, remote and completely unusable piece of land. However, this changed in the 1950s, when prospectors discovered uranium and other mineral wealth here. Fortunately, in 1964, the labyrinth of canyons was declared a national park.

Canyonlands National Park is divided by the Colorado River and the Green River into three completely separate, interconnected parts: The Needles, Island In the Sky and Maze. The shortest route from one area to another is over 100 miles, as they are not connected by roads or bridges, making travel between them very arduous. Each of the areas has its own Visitor Center. The center of the park is the Y-shaped confluence of the Green River and the Colorado River, which lies in the middle of the desert landscape. The confluence can be observed from only one place, namely the parking lot about 8 km away.

The Needles area is said to be the most beautiful of these areas and is found east of Colorado. It is made up of red and yellow sandstone rocks, some of which resemble gigantic mushrooms, but also arches, mountains, gorges and all kinds of canyons. A number of amazing rock formations are only accessible on foot. You can also find here the ruins of the mysterious Anasazi civilization or beautiful petroglyphs. The landscape attracts lovers of adrenaline sports, climbers and drivers of four-wheel drive cars.

The most visited part is the Island in the Sky area, located in the lap of the letter Y. It is accessible to both pedestrians and motorized tourists and offers breathtaking views of the entire park. On the way here, you can also visit Dead Horse Point State Park with an equally attractive landscape.

The part of the park called the Maze lies to the west and is a remote, wrinkled and arid landscape of massive, steep canyons and winding gorges. This area is very rarely visited, only one percent of the total number of almost half a million visitors come here each year. There is a significant presence of prehistoric rock drawings, which are, however, more difficult to access. It is therefore necessary to have sufficient equipment and experience for the visit. Today, this breathtaking area is one of the most inaccessible places in North America.
